May Day 2015

WARBE Development Foundation is observing May Day, the historic day epitomizing workers’ struggle for their rights, by calling for greater unity among establishment owners and workers, and striving for the country’s progress. Many workers sacrificed their lives on May 1, 1886 and the following days during a series of movements, bomb attacks, riots and police actions on agitating workers.

The day is a public holiday. May Day is also known as International Workers’ Solidarity Day. The theme of the day this year is ‘Let us forge worker-owner unity and build a Sonar Bangla. ‘WARBE Development Foundation along with Bangladesh Ovibashi Adhiker Forum (BOAF) a national level migrants rights NGO networks on the occasion of the International Workers Day – May 1st 2015 sends a warm salute to the international working class and the 90 million Bangladeshi migrant workers working different countries of the world. In front of this situation, the WARBE along with Ovibashi Adhikar Forum calls and remind Governments to adhere to the 1998 ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work which are applicable to migrant workers as well regardless of their status.

Labors from different organizations of the country joined street rallies and other activities to raise their voices for ensuring their rights and upholding spirit of the May Day. Syed Saiful Haque, Chairman of WARBE Development Foundation, said combined efforts of workers and owners were necessary to build a strong economy and for better living conditions, for a society without exploitation, for a society where the needs of the working class and the people will come first. He also said that this year would be a step forward for the international for the labor movement in each country, region and sector.
