Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SDGs serve as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all—leaving no one behind.
Migration and the SDGs: A Cross-Cutting Link
Migration is intricately linked with development and features prominently across the SDGs. Migrant workers, their families, and diaspora communities play a critical role in achieving development outcomes both in countries of origin and destination.
Key SDG goals related to migration include:
- Goal 5 – Gender Equality: Address the specific vulnerabilities of women migrant workers and promote their empowerment and protection.
- Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Promote safe and secure working environments for all workers, including migrant workers.
- Goal 10 – Reduced Inequalities: Target 10.7 explicitly calls for the facilitation of safe, orderly, regular, and responsible migration through well-managed migration policies.
- Goal 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions: Promote inclusive societies and access to justice for migrants and vulnerable groups.
- Goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals: Strengthen multi-stakeholder collaboration, including international cooperation on migration governance.
WARBE DF’s Engagement with the SDGs
WARBE Development Foundation (WARBE DF) integrates the SDG framework across its programs and advocacy to ensure that migration is treated as a development priority. Our work contributes directly to the realization of several SDGs by:
- Promoting Safe and Informed Migration.
- Advocating for Decent Work and Ethical Recruitment (SDG 8).
- Championing Gender Equity in Migration (SDG 5).
- Reducing Inequalities through Inclusive Policy Advocacy (SDG 10).
- Engaging in the UN HLPF and VNR Processes (SDG 17).
UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (UN HLPF)
The United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (UN HLPF) is the central platform for reviewing the global implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 SDGs.
The HLPF plays a vital role in tracking global progress, identifying challenges, sharing best practices, and encouraging meaningful multi-stakeholder participation to accelerate SDG implementation.
WARBE DF’s Engagement with the UN HLPF
WARBE Development Foundation (WARBE DF) actively contributes to the monitoring, review, and implementation of SDG-related processes at national, regional, and global levels, particularly those affecting migrant workers and their families.
Key areas of engagement include:
- Contributing to Bangladesh’s Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs): Ensuring that the experiences and needs of migrants are reflected in country progress reports to the HLPF.
- Civil Society Advocacy at the HLPF: Representing migrant communities in UN HLPF side events, thematic discussions, and shadow reporting.
- SDG Localization and Community Outreach: Integrating SDG targets into our programming—ranging from ethical recruitment awareness to gender empowerment and financial literacy for migrants.
- Building Stakeholder Collaboration: Working with government institutions, NGOs, and trade unions to advocate for inclusive, gender-sensitive, and data-driven migration policies.
